How to upgrade to the latest Wordpress 2.3?
In my previous post, I mentioned that I will be upgrading my wordpress 2.2.

Guess what? I did it today, and it was a success.

I mentioned earlier that I am kinda scared to upgrade due to the plugins incompatibility. I guess I was wrong. None of my plugins are conflicting with the new Wordpress 2.3. In fact, as the features suggest, it provides plugin update notification which I found was good. Out of the many few, 2 of my plugins need to be updated :D

Maybe I’ll do it later, when I have time :D The question is How to upgrade your current wordpress to the latest Wordpress 2.3?

Here’s the simplest way how you can do it.

  1. Before you do anything else, please back-up your data which is your database and your files. Step-by-step backup instruction can is available here
  2. Once you’ve done your back-up, deactivate all of your plugins
  3. Now go and get the latest Wordpress
  4. By default, the download is in Zip format. Now, extract the downloaded files to your computer
  5. Before we go any further, please check your wp-content folder. This folder keeps your plugins and themes. You might want to back this up too
  6. Open your FTP, and copy (if fact the right word is overwrite the old files) the new files to your server.
  7. After overwriting all the old files, you can go to your website and look at it. Your website will not look right unless you do the last step below
  8. Activate your upgrades by visiting the upgrade page by typing “http://yourwebsite.com/wordpress/wp-admin/upgrade.php” or “http://yourwebsite.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php”
  9. You are done upgrading. You can login to your website and start activating your plugins one by one. Yes, so it would be easy for you to detect the incompatible plugins later on.

Important Note: In my case, I’ve encountered a problem. The problem was - where I couldn’t publish, save and add categories. It says Data Error as shown below.

Data Error

After some testing, I found out that the main cause for this is the Google Sitemap Plugins. All you need to do is deactivate the Google Sitemap Plugins, and you’ll be fine. However, I wonder whether this will have an impact on my google compliant sitemap creation for Wordpress?
