Filtering your wireless router is an important thing. You do not want someone to use your wireless network for free right. If you hate using the encrypted type security, then you can always do a MAC filtering from your wireless router.
Before proceeding with this step, you will need to learn the first process which is checking the IP and physical address. The first step is always important so make sure you read it. It will only take less than 2 minutes to understand that.
Let’s move on to the next step which is setting up your router for MAC filtering? But before we move on, it’s always important what is MAC filtering.
What is Mac filtering?
MAC address filtering refers to a security access control methodology whereby the 48-bit address assigned to each network card is used to determine access to the network. Therefore, using MAC filtering on a network permits and denies network access to specific devices through the use of blacklists and whitelists.
In layman terms, without MAC address filtering, any wireless client can join your Wi-Fi network if they know your network name.
Now, let’s get started with the simple start-up. Please bear in mind that this only works if you are using a wireless network.
Step 1:
- Check for your Default gateway. You can see the steps here. Usually, the gateway no will be like 1xx.1xx.x.x.
- The ‘x’ represent a number.
Step 2:
- Once you’ve obtained your default gateway, go to your firefox or IE and type the gateway address like this - http://1xx.1xx.x.x and click enter.
- Your wireless router homepage will be opened (as shown by the pic below).
- Sometimes, you will need to insert your username and password. Insert it (if you have one), if you don’t have it, check with your router provider. I don’t have it for sure

Step 3:
- Now, look for an ‘Advanced’ button. Click the advanced button. Once you are in the Advanced page. Look for ‘Wireless Management’ (see pic below) and click it.

Step 4:
-
Once clicking the “Wireless Management” you will find an access list (see pic below).
-
Add your ‘router physical address’ not the LAN physical address. If you forget how to get this, you can get the address here.
-
Now ‘Add” your ‘router physical address’ to the list.

Step 5:
Tell me, is that simple or hard. Should you have any other simple ways, please share it with me.
